Here's some information on the Adventure Pass:http://bigbear.us/adventurepass.html
You can get them from places like: Turners, Sport Chalet, REI, etc.
As far as a cheap hotel. I would check websites like hotels.com
I don't know where you are coming from but, the drive up and down is very easy in the summer. It is exactly 2 hours from our house and we go all the time just for the day to run or mountain bike.
Hope to see you there.
Don

Anytime you go up into the mountains, whether its the San bernardino, San Gorgonio, or Angeles National Forest, you have to buy a Wilderness Pass.  They are $5 day/$30 year and if you buy a second year pass, it's only $5 for the second one.  They are needed if you use any of the public facilities, park there and help maintain roads.

If you don't find a cheap enough motel you can camp for free at a yellow post site.

Thanks for putting together this run Don. I just found out I will be on business travel for the next two weeks and can't make it.  :( It would be nice to see you and Denise again.

You still need an Adventure Pass for the yellow post campsite. Basically it's a clearing with a fire pit and a picnic bench.  I just went in July and stayed at #7 I think it was. I really liked that spot. Nice valley, could of large boulders to block wind. A little close to the main dirt road, but not much traffic.

There are YP sites scattered throughout the area.  Best thing to do is probably go to the Big Bear Discovery Center and talk to a ranger.  They should be able to point some out for you.  Finding one on a Saturday could be tough though.  They are first come first serve and go fast in the summer.

$56.99 per night at Motel 6 if you want amenities. Although I really like the Yellow Post sites now that I know what they are. Great idea!

Hey Dan sorry you can't make it. Can you believe it has been one year since we last went on an Xcursion? It was in August of last year when we went to Big Bear.

Sorry you can't make it Brian. Understand about the soccer tournaments. We were on that merry go round quite a few years ago. Is that the tournament held at the polo fields?

Hey Goldfish, I might not make it 'cause budget MIGHT be tight.  Won't know untill that Fri. so I don't want to be responsible for you not getting your adventure pass.  I'm really going try to make it.  On another note, it's nice to hear from you Brian.  Are you finally back to wheel with us?
