Fish Creek & Sandstone Canyon - Jan 31, 2011 - A few pics
« on: February 01, 2011, 11:42:30 PM »
We had some relatives from Seattle in town this weekend, and they wanted to see the desert, so I took them out to Anza Borrego for the day. Since we were just in the one truck we decided to keep it easy and scenic, and went to Fish Creek and Sandstone Canyon. It was sunny and 70F out there on Monday, but the wind did pick up some in the late afternoon. Here are a few pictures.

There is a second rockfall that completely blocks the canyon about 1/3 mile past the big rockfall that we saw back in November (the one that it looks like a few people might have gotten over). Judging by tire tracks, I would say that only a motorcycle has gotten past this second block.

I think we may have found the next rockfall as well. Check out the big spire on the right, it looks like it won't take much to make it slide right off the lower portion.

I did notice that the sign noting the more recent end of the driveable part of the canyon is now gone, I guess the Park figures it's no longer necessary with those 2 rockfalls blocking the way.  We did walk all the way back to what used to be the end of the route. It's really quiet back there on weekdays, we hardly saw anyone else the whole day, and other than one Jeep we passed on our way in to Sandstone Canyon (he was leaving), we were the only ones there.

There are a few more pictures at this gallery.

Great pictures Frank. Looks like it's time for some trail maintenance.

It's great you were able to get out there during the week.  That's always a good scenic drive to take.

Nice photos!  Looks like you guys had a sunnier and warmer day there than we did on Sunday.

We really did luck out as to weather (although a few more fluffy clouds would have been nice for the photos). It was probably around 70.  I heard it got up to 51 or so out there today. Who knows what the wind was like.

The relatives had spent all day Saturday and Sunday driving a Ford Behemoth diesel pickup hauling a rather long trailer down from Seattle, mostly in the rain. They had a 14-foot 380-pound sailboat on the roof of the truck (on 3 Yakima crossbars) and another on a trailer, along with the 20-foot masts hanging off the trailer.  I think that they really appreciated the sun and the quiet of the desert after that.

I'll bet they did!

The dramatic clouds were very nice for the photos we took, but we got cold, lots of wind, and off-and-on rain along with it!  ; D
